So my partner and I just picked up a 1972 mini with the following upgrades.

Has the following engine work done
998cc engine rebuilt 5 yrs ago along with gear box
998 cooper s camshaft
28/36 Weber down drought carb.
12g202 ground out to a 12g295
New Lightened flywheel and clutch plate
Electronic distributor
2core redline radiator
Full exhaust ( unsure about type) has header to tailpipe done.

The issue I am having is it’s running rich and smokes on throttle under load? Currently running 98 octane with no additives. The carb has signs of slight weeping and no vacuum from carb to distributor.

Not many in the world of Minis today would be using a 28/36 Weber down draught carb on a 998cc Mini but if you are still determined to use it then it will need setting up correctly on a rolling road.

Well since I just did a disc brake conversion I’ll have to settle for tuning it until a better option becomes available. It runs smooth but the smoke is an issue not dramatic but noticeable.

So where would one start if trying to tune?

I would get rid of the carb and look at fitting a Hif38 instead suitably re needled.

Don't get me wrong the Weber is a good carb but is it really suitable for that size of engine?? And by the sounds of it you really need a decent rolling road session to optimise the Weber if you decide to keep it.

You can rule out the "998 cooper s camshaft".

Buy and fit something like a "Maniflow" inlet manifold and an 1 1/2" SU carburettor.

Why not keep the 28/36 to be different?  David Vizard quite liked them.  If it's not burning oil then it sounds like you need to find a rolling road to get it tuned.  Is the air filter clean?

Yeah I think a proper tune by someone is the go here the carb is a good setup albeit I can get the tuning done right. Upgrading at this point is not an option due to lack of funds at the moment. But I appreciate all the recommendations at this point.

Yeah air filter is clean. I’m going to do an oil change and thinking of checking valve clearances. Any idea what the valve clearance on a 998 with cooper s cam would be?

Worst carb I have ever used on a Mini. I would not throw any money at it that involves that carb. Until it is replaced with as suggested a HIF38.
