I need to pick up an engine, complete with gearbox, head and flywheel.  Do we reckon it would go in the boot of a hatchback?

Picking up from workshop so hoping they have a hoist, and I have a hoist at home.

Thinking id have to tip it flat, on its back.  My concern is getting into and back out of the well of the boot and will the hoist foul with the tail gate?

Any tips and experiences with transporting a complete engine much appreciated?

I sold one and the buyer put it in the passenger footwell of his Mini.

Two people should be able to lift it out onto the ground, you can them move the car to get the hoist over it, or you could have a trolley on casters ready to put it on.  I would think you would get it in a lot of hatches with the back seats up and stood up.  If you can do this you'll want to pas it out some how to stop it tipping, but it'll be easier to lift it in and out that way.

It can be done, but the jib of the hoist will probably hit the top of the tailgate.

If you have a lot of helpers, you can tilt the engine as it goes in and lays flat on the floor of the car on a wooden board which can be tilted to allow the engine to slide down the board supported by the hoist.

To get it out the engine and board and slid back so that the board acts as a ramp and the engine can be slid up the ramp, again supported by the hoist.

I have done this, but care is needed together with some 'human muscle'. You would be better finding a friend with a van.

I got mine in the back of my 1 series, like some have said it was lay down flat against the collapsed back seats. Just strap it down with the seatbelt/cargo net loops as you don't want it sliding anywhere!

We were able to lift it in with a couple pairs of hands and then hoist it out onto a pallet. Takes a bit of maouvering but can be done relatively easy.

It was easier with a Land Rover Discovery...

Make sure its empty of oil and water first!! Might be teaching you to suck eggs but once in and its laying down if there are fluids in there they will try and escape.

Check your boot floor as well, depending upon the make of car some have storage cubbies under the boot floor meaning the floor can be a little wimpy - if that's the case add a board not just as a ramp but also to take the weight. I discovered this recently putting bags of limestone in the boot of a Polo!

If there will be two to help, put one end of a scaffold board in the boot and man handle the engine on to the other end.

Two can lift the board while the other slides the engine into the car.

Even better if you can block the other end and use a hoist.

Update - got the complete engine in and out of the boot no problems.  I did put a small pallet in the boot well to make it easier and lifted it on to a crate first then a second lift to the ground.

Its now in the car with driveshafts, engine mounts and gear selected all connected up.

Awesome.
I've moved a complete engine and box in a mini. Took the passenger seat out, on some wood and tied it to the door handle and driver's seat. This being back in the day when a mini was my only car so needs must.

I once bought a mini engine off ebay , took my mate with me to pick it up as he had a trailer . When we got back I went into the garage to get the lifting gear , I turned round and my mate was stood in the doorway holding the engine , he just said were do you want this ? Thing is he's a scrawny , five foot nothing bloke . Felt guilty afterwards as I was more concerned for the engine than his back .
