Hi folks - I have what I believe is a 1968 boot lid which is the mk1 style / dual skinned (not the open webbing type) that is ready for paint. Before I do, I would like to also mount my rear mounted Lucas reverse lamp which I currently run on Mk4 boot. It would require drilling a hole in both layers and possibly using a grommet to cover the hole on the interior side. Any reaction to that? Am I stepping onto a sacrilegious landmine for cutting into this lid? Not sure how rare or in demand these things are.

Ain’t there a hole already for the number plate illumination? Use that.

Why would he want to mount a reversing lamp where the number plate lamp is?

It’s your car, drill the holes if you want. Some people may moan, but it’s not an irrepairable thing and there are still Mk2 lids around.

Never said that. There will be a hole in the second skin where the wires enter the boot space. Use that hole.

I think he means to actually tighten the nut up as he would need a much larger hole directly above the boot lamp to tighten it up

If it’s what you want buzz a hole in it. It can be invisibly repaired. Probably best to go for a gap rather than a rib.

I used to have a reversing lamp on my mk2 and I drilled through both skins and just secured it on inner skin, the large rubber washer sealed on the outer, not got it on now, but easy to weld in a patch if you align it away from a rib on inner.
