I stripped my gearbox but never took of the selector forks. I had the mainshaft, bearings, layshaft, diff out, etc. I have put everything back together but have a conundrum.
So when I went to locate the gear selector back into the selector forks before putting the detent spring in I noticed that the top (1st/2nd) selector is not aligned with the 3rd/4th & reverse selctor. It is pointing more towards the backoff the gearbox/ (layshaft directoin), as opposed to the left (speedo housing side).
See pic (it is hard to see, so I outlined the fork so you can see the direction)
I've checked I've built the mainshaft correct. With the gear selector out of the way (anticlockwise) I can select the gears manually, as needed for torquing the gearbox.
Now I have no idea how this has happened and if it is even possible. I can't hook it and drag it back to the correct direction. The only thing I can think of is that when the mainshaft was out, the fork (cradle for the gear) rocked backwards off the slot, and then the selector rotated and is now not engaged between the fork and selector?
Anyone had this problem? Do you think I have to strip the gearbox again, pull the mainshaft, and move it around? I suppose it could be worse, I could have built the rest of the engine and dropped it in the car to realise I had no 1st/2nd gear?
Thanks
