I have made something similar after going through multiple attempts of different styles etc as above. This was by far the most effective and simplest door grip solution for me and is holding up really well. The driver side leather is slightly darker now as its being used more... +1 for patina!
Thank you! It is Indeed quite nice. You do need custom door cars however otherwise there will be holes in it.
But it's Indeed quite élégant

yea the cards were new, and i didnt want to make holes inside so i used what was there. Also fits in slightly with the interior. moslty black leather with white stitches, then an element of leather here or there.

Just wanted to share with you new version of those handles:
I use now a different burnishing gum all by hand for the edges. New water resistant bee wax treatment.

I've got to hand it to you Benoit, your design and implementation is first class. I believe, deep down, you're a bit of a perfectionist and it shows not only in the items you produce but even in the quality of the photographs of these items.
Keep up the good work.

I prefer design 2 but I wonder if the eyelets will start popping out of the leather when it's been softened by a thousand uses?

I like the look of these Benoit, very nice.
Have you considered using mirror screws for the fixings?
Not sure if the correct size/thread would be availabe, but they could provided another style option.

Mirror screws now that's a good idea!

sorry for being late to answer that one. thank you very much for your kind words. I am a bit of a control freak when it comes to the stuff I design and manufacture. It has pro and cons: pro, it gets me the result I want. Con: it takes freaking ages.

Hi, I actually did not. I could indeed had a standard captive nut. (I know have a nut rivet gun !!!)
But actually, it has some flaws in the reasoning:
those handles respect the standard placement of door handles: in the place where you put the screws, there are square plastic insert that serves as a retainer for the screw.
if you remove the insert, you are left with a rather huge square hole in the door panel. so if you want to put a captive nut, you need to weld this square shut, then drill it and put a captive nut.
it seems a lot and then you can't revert to the original handles and I like the idea that if someones takes care of the car after me, he still has the option to put it back to original.

I see, yes for ease of installation/removal it is wise to keep the original fixing method in mind.
The ones I was thinking of are not machine screws, so do not require a captive nut, but may be too long or could damage the existing insert if they have a different thread pitch.
Mirror Screws available with either flat or domed caps.
Do you have any photos of them installed in the car?

it looks like that ones on the door card: the number and spacing of the eyelet makes it so that it keeps its shape.

to answer someone else question above: although I can not be sure how it will evolve, I think the Eyelets are unlikely to pop-out really:
they have a lip of at least 4mm all around.
the leather is thick 3.2mm pull-up, european source only.
I'm fairly sure it won't move nor get saggy. but then again, the only thing I can do is make sure all odds are in my favor while designing this
