Against:

Unremittingly ugly
All look the same
Bad for the environment (tyre particulates if nothing else)
Likely to be shunted in the rear because their height and small back window mean that you can't see what the traffic in front of them is doing
Very often driven by women who believe they're twice their actual width
Chew up the roads because of their weight
Too wide for narrow lanes in the countryside
Too wide for carpark spaces
Very often driven by ex-BMW drivers (or as Mr May calls them - 'knobs')who seem to think they own the road.
Seem to be bought as an Egoboost (some even has a badge to that effect - or do my glasses need cleaning?) or as a safety device for poor drivers.
When everyone (except me) has one, how will the self -important differentiate themselves?
(Obviously classic landrovers or RangeRovers are not included in the above critique)

I love a proper 4x4. SUV's or 'fat hatchbacks' as I like to call them, are utterly pointless.

Marketing genius, convincing everyone to pay more for the worst of all worlds. But as Haz pointed out....

I owned an Audi Q2 for about 9 months, and I have got to say it,s the worst car I have owned for a long long time, poor MPG (23) for a 1.4, it wheel span at any incline, and even on the lowest setting it would not allow me to go through tight gaps without automatically applying the brakes. When I complained to Audi they said the poor fuel consumption and wheel spin was because it had 19 inch wheels. So no more SUV’s for me, the only good point was it lost very little value over the 9 months.

For:  better for crashing into other SUVs

        better for seeing the road ahead when every other vehicle in front is an SUV

        good way of clearing country lanes of inferior vehicles as you approach them

        good way of increasing your monthly bills

Although the trend towards wearing skinny jeans is indeed worrying, even more concerning is the inability of the modern male to place the waist band of trousers above the hips.  It is left midway up the buttocks which gives a "Mummy makes me dress myself" look.

Another slightly worrying trend of the modern male is the desire to wear tee shirt, shorts and flip flops when out and about.....regardless of the temperature, weather or season.

If you live near a school in London and the South East all surrounding roads are jammed chaos in the mornings and afternoons at school dropping off and picking up times with assorted Monster Trucks/SUV's/Chelsea Tractors, no idea why this has happened, clever marketing I suppose but hopefully the trend will eventually die out as did the desire to drive around in people carriers a few years back.

I haven't found one yet that has a seating position higher than my old rusty Volkswagen van, and they sure get out of the way quick rather than risk scratching their precious

My parents live out in the countryside. You can tell those that are originally from the area and those that moved their by what they drive.

All the locals (including most of the farmers) drive hatchback and saloon cars as their normal day to day vehicle. The people that move into the area all seam to by 4x4s "incase it snows, so they don't get stuck".

The snow comes every year and at some point one of them ends up in a ditch.

I once stopped to check if the driver of a BMW X5 that had gone nose first into a ditch, on a straight road, was okay. The woman was and then proceeded to "warn" me that the road was "really treacherous" (no s*** there's 6" of snow on the road) and I should avoid it. I said thanks and proceeded to drive up the slight hill in my 1995 mk3 astra diesel.
