Hi,  I have recently reassembled my Mpi engine - I followed as best I could the Haynes manual (for what is is worth) but being a bit old school I and am not greatly into Fuel Injected/Electronic ignition engines.

I know the principles and my question relates to timing - I can get the engine to TDC, as indicated on crank-pulley and valves closed, but this is where my "ignorance" kicks in - how do I know I put the flywheel on correctly - for the life of me I put it together some time ago and I couldn't remember whether there is only one way to re-install?! -

I have re-read the manual and nowhere could I see that the re-build states a correct position - (Normal Haynes Manual "speak" you know "Reassemble is the reverse of disassemble".!)

So, essentially I am hoping the flywheel sensor is positioned correctly so that the ECU knows the position of the engine to fire the electronic distributor.

Can anybody out there ease my mind and give a heads up as to whether I am correct or am I madly wrong - before I try to re-install the engine.!

Thanks for any help/guidance you knowledgeable people out there can give me.

Well, as long as I remember, all injection engines can have the flywheel on one way.
So you shouldn't be able to put it on at 180degrees anyway.
I reassembled mine 4 years ago and its still waiting...
Wait for some confirmation just to be in the sage side, but I'm pretty sure.

When you put it into the crank, you'll see the cutout is offset and the key will only allow it that way comfortably.

I'm far from being knowledgeable on these models, however, it seems it's to do with the Diaphragm / Pressure Plate on these. The SPI and MPI ones are different and it appears will interchange. Fitting a SPI one in to a MPI will cause the timing to be out by about 30 degrees.

Ben,  Thanks for replying - Yes, understand - but you know what it's like...doubts start to creep in..!!  I am assured by others that you can only fit flywheel one way - so I think it might be OK..!!  Thanks again for replying.

Steve, thanks for replying - think you have managed to set my mind to rest - you know what it's like - doubts start to creep in.!  Thanks again.! Best regards

Hey Dear Moke Spider (Great name.!)  -  Yes, I am aware of the different clutch arrangements -  but went back with any new bits fitted..!  It's just been a long time now since I rebuilt the unit and I am just about to put it all back into the car - so doubts started to creep in...you know how it is. Others have assured me that the flywheel can only fit on end of crank one way so I'm pretty confident I got that right..!  Thanks for taking the time to reply. Best regards

Happy days !

Yes, it can only go on one way, but I'm sure if one wanted to be ham fisted enough, it could go on many ways !  :D  I'm sure that you don't have ham in your fist !

Cheers

The key ('scuse the pun) is in the keyway locking plate. The keyway slots in both the crank and flywheel are slightly offset, it's possible to position the flywheel on the crank 180 degs out but not then possible to fit the locking plate because the slots won't line up. It'll be obvious if it's wrong!
