So I am installing some gauges in my 88 Mini and I need to ground the light bulbs... Where can I take a ground behind the dash so I don't damage anything important?

Alternatively you could tap into any black wires you find above the heater.

Those black wires usually end in an earth point somewhere behind the dash .. at least on all the classics I've worked on they have

I used the steel bracket that supports the clocks as an earth for my power outlet sockets.
