Hi guys... quick question...

Has anyone heard of the expansion tanks on the mpi going ‘soft’ with age?

As some may have read elsewhere, the cap on mine started blowing steam and water out and when I just touched the threads went and it shot off resulting in me getting a bit of a scald

Thing is the previous lid did the same when hot... like it had gone soft when hot, hence me changing it... but as it’s two for two now I’m beginning to wonder if it’s the threads/plastic of the tank maybe?

Hi Honda-Mini,

I had a few problems with my overall cooling system and expansion tank on my mpi. 1st thing I would recommend is getting a new cap as these can wear out over time, make sure you get a good one from a reputable seller and they are only cheap. Below is a link - good luck!

Bit of an oxymoron there as you've linked to the least reputable company in the market.

Don't use one from a mini spares company, get one from an R50/R5e bmw mini, it's a much better item.

So, I have done a thing today... firstly, I found that the original header is indeed slightly threaded, as in I can tighten the cap down but put a little more pressure on and it just clicks round iykwim... so I replaced it for one I had in stock...

Ok... I found a nice little mod over on the mini torque forum to stop new minis boiling up due to a duff cap and thought I’d apply it to the classic :)
