My 64 850 feels just right for the car. It's totally standard. The breaks, steering wheel, tyres even seats wouldn't be up to it if it went any faster. I like how it bimbles along. It's relatively relaxed and comfortable. It has the excellent torque characteristics that all A series have, making it very forgiving. Up into 4th by 25mph and purposefully onwards to a happy 60mph, buzzing along. Not gonna set the road on fire but very enjoyable.

My 'warmed over' Spi is a rocketship by comparison with nearly double the ponies, but it's a different car altogether. That power in the 850 would be of detriment to its charm I think.

I agree, just spent a small fortune having my 850 rebuilt, few mods such a slighty better cam and cleaned up the head.  It is actually nicer to drive than my 1380.

Yes, the original 850 has a classic charm of its own. I have not driven a standard one for many years and most now have either bigger engines, disc brakes, improved suspension, etc. It seems a shame really as the original model of any type will be iconic, as is the 850 now.

Next time you find yourself in Queensland give me a shout. Hopefully I'm home by then and you can take our '64 for a lovely cruise down the esplanade then up into the hinterland for a pootle around the countryside. Just lovely :)

well someone did tellme the 850 city was worth restoring to standard as not that many around unmolested/modified   it would need front fllor pans [first 8-10 inches  outer cills a panels and inner wing could be patched but i wpuld chande the whole thing and the rear half boot floor

its not that bad considering its apparently been outside sat under a cover for a good ten years
