I have not given up on this, stripped down the engine bay and given it a light blasting until I get some more grit.Uncovered some not so elegant repairs I previously did and found a new hole.

Engine bay blasted and treated with Hydrate 80,recommended to me as the latest greatest rust treatment/preventer.

Every time I look at this car I try to remind myself it is NOT a restoration but then I see something else and cannot resist touching it.Will blast this later when I feel like getting dirty again.Steve..

When blasted I will tidy it up and reinforce it for solid mounts.

With the situation in the world as it is the repaint that was going to be next year has been moved up to now.I have the paint and some new abrasives.I bought the Abranet hand sander with dust extraction. My preparation has always been very poor in the past as the paint has always been seen as protection not glamour. This time I will try to address this. Here are some photos to date.

Thanks,my son drove this for 16 years and completely wore it out before giving it to me as his two small children would not fit in it.It has been an expensive time consuming gift for me.Keeps me busy at this time.Steve..

Sometimes I decide to do jobs in a random order with no reasons. This weeks task was to fit the exhaust as the manifold and carbs and the rusty exhaust were in the way in my newly tidied garage. The exhaust was a Minispares RC40 with maniflow manifold. The manifold rusted thro in approx18 months where the gearbox mount wrapped around it"they always go there I was told".The tailpipe was for some unknown reason chromed. This started rusting on day one and rapidly progressed.I bought a link pipe of some sort from Minispares and repaired it.The new fitting kit also from Minispares was comprehensive, shame that the nuts were a different thread to the bobbins.

As you all know one job leads to others, the tunnel around the gearchange was rusty so I removed the changer and dismantled it,I should have taken more notice of the long bolt retaining the rear saddle, put it the wrong way round and you cannot fit the exhaust. Here are some photos...

PS if you fit the exhaust first you cannot fit the gearchange extension.Enjoy looking,Steve..

As I am going to paint this car I took out the screen,I did not want to find this.Apparently there are two rubbers narrow and wide,Mine is wide which according to Minispares was developed to seal better but tended to cause more rust.I will order the narrow seal to replace it.Laugh at these photos.

No need to laugh, its a common thing to see.

Now your dilemma is how to approach this. Are you going to replace the complete scuttle?? if so buy Heritage as the magnum one is pants.

Now i can see you still have the wings fitted and this will make you life incredibly difficult fitting a complete scuttle. Also the scuttle closeout will be a swine to replace but doable.

Looking at the picture there is a lot of surface corrosion around the bonnet hinge mount and inside it. Its only held on with a couple of spot welds but before you remove it (if you do) i would drill a couple of 1/8th of 5/32nd holes each side through the hinge mount base and bulkhead. This way if you have them you can use a couple of skin pins or clecos to ensure the location stays the same.

I won't be buying any parts for this, too poor and historically mean. The scuttle ends have been replaced in the past with no paint or anything else inside them.Access is indeed difficult but doable.I have plenty of time.
The hinge?still undecided.Thanks for your input.Steve..
