Hi 

 

I’m strongly considering converting my mpi to 10s. 

I love the look from the attached photo and hope that the wheel / arch setup looks just as nice on a Tahiti blue Mini.

Would I need spacers in order to make it look right? - And do you ladies and gents think that this is going to suit a blue MPI Cooper?

the offset of those wheels is designed to avoid needing arches, so you'd need some pretty big spacers to push them back out to look OK with those arches

I'm fairly sure you can buy rose petal wheels with offsets to suit arches

Edit : interesting looking wheel nuts on the front wheel. Looks like the studs haven't been extended when spacers have been fitted

A set of gold 4.5" Minilites would look good with the Tahiti blue, not sure about the black / blue combo?

Those gold wheels aren't too bad! You might be right about that black and blue perhaps isn't the best combination. 

 

In regards to offset and arches. How do I find the right offset for my (standard non sportspack MPI) arches?

I believe the standard cooper, non sportspack alloy wheels were 12" x 4 1/2" fitment.

The gold 10" ones I linked are disc brake offset, the other option being drum brake offset.

I would imagine these would fit the same as your original wheels, under the standard arches but I'd check with supplier to be certain before ordering - unless anyone else can say for definite?

Oh, you should so do it. I'm seriously considering going to 10s myself as I much prefer the ride on 10s. And the look.

With your wheel /arch choice, remember you already have spacers, so to speak. They are built into your rear drums like all post 84 cars (And the GT, Cooper S etc..) because the front track is wider.

I only had a couple of weeks driving my MPI on it's 10" wheels before stripping it down, but it was a world of improvement in both ride quality and handling/road holding. I'd encourage anyone to do it, as they look great too especially on standard 'special' arches, or going fully archless.

My 1964 'S' has no arch extensions and I run 4.5 x 10 Minilites. My 1990 rally car, currently being restored, will have no arch extensions and will be running 5" x 10" BWA Alloys.

A set up I envy.
The wider you go on the wheels, the harder the steering and the greater the bump steer.

10s with their higher tyre side wall giving a smoother ride and as close in as possible giving nimble steering and minimal bump steer is my ideal. As the car was originally intended.

My 520 x 10" crossplies give a lovely ride quality but not a great deal of cornering grip, sideways drifting at 20MPH!    A wet roundabout is just hilarious!

I will defo be going 10s x 6", probably Revolutions with no arches. I did love my steel Cooper S wheels I had back in the 80s with the centre plain hub cap.

They are, suits the use my little old 850 gets and look the part too. Wouldnt want to be depending on them in wintry conditions but its a car that hibernates over the winter.

6 x 10" wheels usually need arches......
