Reset the spark plugs to 32thou, but more worryingly did a compression test and the results are

C1 - 165psi
C2 - 150psi
C3 - 145psi
C4 - 155Psi

compression aint too bad , I removed the module and refitted ,another electronic ignition setup , cant remember which , you running mechanical fuel pump it may be its had its day , take the pipe off the carb and stick it in a jamjar then get someone to crank it over , don't forget to remove the ht lead though or it may fire up
Oh really? Thank god was worried it was going to need the head taking off, ah okay I might have to see if anyone local has a spare dizzy I can borrow to test, the fuel pump is about 3-4 years old but only fitted 18 months ago when I bought the car but I will test to check

id try a spare dizzy first ,itl probably fire straight up with a replacement dizzy and timing set correctly

I wouldn't just yet, do one small thing at a time, if it doesn't improve reset and move elsewhere

Whilst I’m not going to be too quick to assume it’s sorted she started first time today after adjusting the spark plug gap! So thanks for the advice I’ll keep you posted if she keeps behaving herself

Isn't the ballast resistor coil to help with weak spark on cranking? Because the starter motor is using so much juice?

You say it's converted to non ballast resistor and I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if all the bits you put on compensate for that.

But I have had similar problems before where the car would crank fine but not start, and start absolutely fine with a bump start or if connected to another car via jump leads. It was the jump leads that gave the game away as on it's own battery, whilst cranking, the spark was weak as ****.

It was a long time ago but I think I cured it with the coil off a metro, the same metro in the scrappers that donated it's dizzy, and a battery with more cranking power.

Anyway, probably useless but just wondered.

Ballast resistor coil only uses 9volts when running, 12v during cranking on a separate wire

Gone out this morning started 3rd time, which is really confusing, I was reading on another forum just about HS4 issues and someone mentioned the waxstat playing up could that possibly be causing issues?

Yea she’s always been really good but it seems if I leave her for more than 5-6 hours in the cold then she struggles to starts but once warm she starts on the button

Check the voltage on the battery any less than 12 volts will cause the issues you describe, also check the age of the battery
