Hey guys,

 

For many years I've been using a Bosch made GT40 Ignition Coil with both standard Points type and Electronic Ignition systems. I'm not sure if these are available in the UK or if they are at all popular in those parts? They have shown them selves reliable and a good all round Coil and the best part is they are fast as they are painted Red.

 

Recently, I've had a bit of feedback that these Coils are now not of the quality they once were with them running too hot to touch and in quite a few cases, failing in a matter of weeks.

 

Just wondering what other Coils our members have used in very recent times and how you've found them. These are for non-ballasted type installations.

 

One that was suggested is the Lucas DBL-105. While I haven't used that particular Coil, I did a couple of years back try the 'standard' Lucas boxes coil, with them lasting usually only a few weeks and one in particular, 10 minutes before failing. But I'm open to suggestions based on the experience of others.

Old Skool minis are advertising a uk made pride coil as being very good quality, the advert is on Facebook, maybe worth looking into one of those, I don’t like any new lucas stuff, had an ignition switch fail after a short time, so any green boxed Lucas stuff I avoid. Usually look for nos stuff for my car,

The Bosch blue that Swifty uses is supposed to be good
I run a resin filled one now with an external ballast, much stronger spark than any I’ve ever tried and is surviving the rigours of competition well.

I use the Lucas sport coil which has been grand for the (limited) use my Mini gets.

I've had good luck with the epoxy filled Bosch Blue coil, #00012.  Look for the one made in Brazil.

I have had issues with Lucas coils a while back including the so-called 'Sports' coil. 

Peter Baldwin was talking about his as well and mentioned poor quality from the Lucas ones. He mentioned the 'Pertronix' as being an expensive, but reliable option.

When the Lucas stuff was being a nuisance I used a Delphi coil and I still have it. It has worked well, although I don't do many miles. The Bosche coils have a good reputation as well.

I've been using a Lucas DBL-105 I bought from eBay for around 4 years / 30k miles.  Had no problems with it.  Can't speak for anything newer though...

Our main stock of coils now are produced by the people that used to make them for Lucas before they went to China for their units. So our MSC105 is the equivalent to their DLB105

I’ve found the Bosch blue very good can get it really cheap through Euro car parts as well with the discount code

From my big box of daft ideas - has anyone tried running half a wasted spark coilpack? You might get OEM quality with a spare coil thrown in. Where to stick the wasted spark though

My AC Delco coil has been making a spark jump 1/2" for over 40 years, but I suppose that's no help if you are buying a new one off the shelf now.

I've had the DLB 105 on mine for a while not missed a beat yet.

I dont use the DLB105, I've had 2 of these coils fail on the same car. I usually use Intermotor rotor arms, dizzy caps and modules on the 65D dizzy, so try their coil if you can.

Im sure the team at Minispares will be able to work something out for shipping to you, yes it may mean a few days(weeks?) off the road whilst you wait on returns if needed, if I was in this situation I'd stock up in multiples so you always have spares as needed.
