I've had an aftermarket rev counter in my mk1 Mini for ages and it was fine until recently, then needle started bouncing around between zero and 1500, whatever the revs. Fine - I replaced it with a fleabay special which wouldn't react to revs properly and was wildly innacurate, so that went back and I bought a more expensive replacement. That was OKish for a week, now goes straight to max when you start up. Could something else be going on, other than a whole bunch of chinese made crap? They are 52mm gauges and take the signal from the -ve terminal of coil (neg earth car)

Ta.

I would have thought that the signal wire would be taken from the -ve side of the coil on a -ve earth system, the side that goes to the dizzy

Apologies, you are correct. It is and always has been on the -ve side (I've edited original post)

My rev counter has done the same recently (Smiths) so I'll also be interested to see if anyone has any ideas as to why it happens?

Some tachos don't like elecronic ignition if you have it fitted

You need a suitable type for points or electronic ignition, depending on what you have fitted the signals are different

That makes sense. I'm still running points and condenser and no plans to change. Not been mentioned by the sellers when I've bought these though

Smiths RVI are for points and RVC are for electronic ignition, supposedly!

However I’ve found most RVC ones are clapped out and bounce all over the place with electronic ignition.

You could try placing a 100k or 300k resistor in series with trigger cable. This has helped one of my cars.

Alternatively you can get one of these or an internal version to convert a RVI to electronic or upgrade a knackered RVC;

Ah, this is probably the issue - it's an RVI one I need then. There was no mention of this in the ebay listings, but I suppose all modern cars are electronic ignition so that's all they supply. Another one to send back then!

I had a RV1 tach that was bouncing on points system sent it to speedy cables who converted it to run on points or electronic ignition with a simple rewire Been on for a while now all good.

Mine is an RVC which ran fine on points and OK at first when I changed to electronic but now goes straight to max revs as soon as I turn the ignition on.

All together £117. The instrument was refurbished and the necessary conversion done. I would say well worth the outlay as the quality of the old smiths instruments is far superior to the modern imported instruments.
