So I’ve fitted a new Maniflow 2 box side exit exhaust to my relatively standard a+ 998.

but at the same time changed the carb needle and carb spring.

took it for a test drive and now what’s happening is really strange.

power down in first and second gear... all seems fine.

but in third gear and forth gear when it revs up to about 4000rpm.. the revs then seem to race away but I get no further power... it’s like taking it out of gear whilst keeping your foot on the accelerator.... very weird.

so.. could it simply be that as I fit the exhaust myself on the driveway that the exhaust connections are possibly not tight enough? I didn’t use exhaust paste either.

any help, ideas would be great.

Sounds like a clutch issue.

Pop the original needle and spring back in if the only mod is the exhaust.

Sounds like the clutch is slipping ?

Oh god... didn’t think about the clutch.

the clutch pedal was really low to the floor, so I changed these bits which brought it back further up.... maybe I just never noticed the power as I didn’t take it for much of a test drive after these below changes.

The clutch short arm.

The 2 pins that go into the arm.
The slave push rod.

I’ll change the needle and spring back, see what happens then... but yes... sounds like a clutch issue now you both mentioned it.

Have you adjusted the clutch throw out nuts?

Have you adjusted the clutch throw out nuts?

Throw out nuts don’t effect the position.

Hmmm could it be there is wear on the pins or the ball on the arm failing?

As an aside, only make one adjustment, then road test, or rolling road it if you have time

I replaced the pins and the short arm. I’ve not had the clutch housing off to replace the plunger, and o ring yet though....

There probably IS wear in the plunger... as even with the new short arm.... I can feel it moving slightly in the plunger itself.

really was not wanting to have to try and take the housing off.... I hear it’s a pain ...

so if I’m going to the hassle of taking this off to replace the plunger and o ring.... should I replace the clutch whilst I’m at it?

if so, is it jus this....

https://www.minispar...px|Back to shop

or do I need the kit?

cheers for all the advice ...

it is weird though, as before replacing the short arm and pins... the clutch wasn’t slipping at all.... the problem before this was just that the pedal was right on the floor when the clutch released. After changing these parts it’s now higher up which was great.... but now as I say... it’s slipping in 3rd gear at 4000 revs ish.

If its slipping replace the complete kit, (pressure plate, friction plate and the thrust bearing) you'll also want a primary gear oil seal too

If you are changing the clutch yes. And get a Haynes workshop manual.

No worries, I'd advise buying or borrowing the primary gear removal tool and also the primary gear seal installation tool.

Both are handy to have.

So I’ve finally got the clutch out, without removing the engine, which was a real pain, but doable.

ive removed the Verto 180mm clutch, which is still bolted to the flywheel.

In the photo below, there is rust on the flywheel.

Is that going to cause any issues? If so what can I use to get rid of it?

OR is it best to get a new flywheel? If so, what would be the size as it’s a 180mm verto clutch.

and what should I use to clean inside the clutch housing, as there is lots of dirt/dust towards the bottom, see photo.

thanks.

Change the primary gear oil seal whilst it's in bits, just leave the rust as long as it isn't a massive lip it will be ok.

I just use brake clean or paint thinners to clean the dust off
