Hi guys,
Can someone put me straight with some ignition queries please?
We have an A+ 998cc engine of unknown age (engine number is missing).
We have a Lucas Sports coil model DB105 and a 59D A+ Electronic distributor - neither of which came with the engine so are not original. The engine came with a ballast resistor.

My questions are (a) are the coil and distributor both compatible with each other and the engine and
(B) do we need to install the ballast resistor?
Thanks in anticipation.

Ballast resistor on a mini is a 9volt system, all it is is resistive wire (pink/white and yellow/white at coil positive)

Remove the ballast resistor wire and use a length of standard 12v wire to power the coil.

The DLB105 coil is a 12 volt coil, so by giving 9 volts it won't work.

Personally I'd use a different brand of coil as I've had 5 of these fail on mine and friends minis.

Hope this helps

Thanks Cal, that’s really useful!
Just one more question about the dizzy - it has black and red wires coming from it. The black I’m happy with as it goes to the -ve on the coil but wrt the red wire, on looking at MiniSpares website (where the dizzy came from), they say that this wire should be extended and connected to the white wire at the fuse box when a ballast resistor is fitted.
Would I be right in thinking that with no ballast resistor this red wire can just be terminated?

Thanks again.

You can just connect that to the coil positive there is a schematic on this site

..............as long as you're supplying 12V to the positive side of the coil.....
