I have this 1978 Mini 1000 for about a month.   Using it as a daily driver for a short commute and having a lot of fun.  Fixing lots of things as I go along which is also fun.

The car was fitted with an aftermarket oil cooler which is mounted behind the front grill. Inlet and outlet pipes are top mounted on the cooler. I am pretty sure that when I drain the oil, the cooler will not drain fully (or at all).

Should I unmount it and hang it upside down to allow the oil to drain or just not worry about it.

Thanks

Damo

It would be wise to drain it.

I'll go a step further and suggest it would be even wiser to remove it. You really don't need an Oil Cooler on a Road Car and especially in one like this. Running an Oil Cooler won't let the Oil get up to proper temperature and so it won't lubricate properly, shortening engine life. You'll also find without it, you'll get slightly better fuel mileage to the tank.

If you don't want to remove it, at least fit a blind over it.

Yup, drain it & if the hoses route as I think they do (uphill) it's wise to pre fill iwith fresh oil - as you would the filter.

Thanks both.

Will drain it this time and get the required plumbing to remove it from the loop the next time.

Quick update, removed the oil cooler as part of the oil change. As luck would have it the pipe from the block/pump to the oil cooler reached easily enough to the spin off filter housing so I was able to remove the cooler entirely. Another part to sell off - yay!
