I've been quoted £2400 for a complete build of engine and box

4500 Pounds on an engine rebuild - gulp.

Sorry but a seasoned series A engine builder would certainly notice if the cam bearings were not installed correctly.

Well he is a seasoned a series builder and he did miss it. So not sure what else to tell you. Not that makes any difference to this new issue.

Thats quite good for a standard spec engine let alone a fully lightened, balanced one with stage 4 head, comp diff etc.

I think the parts alone came to about that.

I was quoted more by some very well known builders.

I don't wish to appear harsh but the engine now having failed for a third time suggests that the builder is doing something wrong, it would be interesting to know exactly what has failed but if I were you I would now ask for refund and take it somewhere else.

As an aside i'm on another forum for a different make of car and one of the members of the forum claimed to be a professional of many years experience and rebuilt an engine for one of the other members, after 12 miles it siezed solid and the guy who built it didn't want to know.

It turned out there was list of things wrong with it as long as your arm but the main ones were that there was sawdust (yes big shavings) in the sump, the main bearing caps were all on the wrong positions (because the engine numbers from the rear in that instance not the timing chain end and he didn't know this despite being an expert) and the inlet and exhaust valves had been swapped over.  Ironically the guy who built it had a picture of it on his website and you could see the valves were the wrong way around when you looked closely.

The moral of the story is just because someone talks a good game doesn't mean he knows what he is doing sadly.

Best of luck.

Just the chemical cleaning and machining (not porting) of the head, crank and block will cost over £1000 from any proper machine shop. Start there!

Thanks for the luck sent - i could do with some lately!

If i didn't know the chap personally, had other engines built by him, and know of other people who've had engines built by him, i would 100% agree with you. However, In this instance the previous failures were down to poor workmanship by the engineering shop i used (i supplied the block pre done - and yes he should have noticed but...), then a poorly made replacement bearing which was out of tolerance and then finally when he got it sorted with the correct cam bearing it ran superbly. Another top engine builder who is known to all on here commented on what a sweet engine it was. i'm sure the failure will turn out to be down to more ******* quality parts supplied by one of the 'top' mini spares providers.

Looking at my car with fresh eyes today and in a better mood, I've noticed that the oil pressure gauge is stuck just above 10 ish, so whilst it's one hell of a coincidence, i'm not ruling out a faulty Smiths gauge (it was new 6 weeks ago so was probably due to break any time soon!). Not sure if theres another reason why that might happen and too scared to start it for now, but will look further at the weekend.
