I don`t think 0.002" on a surface grinder is going to make any negligible difference to the CR at the expense of the head gasket integrity.

Its just good practice to ensure the build is the very best it can be.

Check using both sides of the ruler.

0.001" is the outside limit over the length of the block and 0.0004" (4 tenths of 1 thousands) over the width.

A small update. All measurements are in mm.

I found two kinds of thin paper to determine how flat it was and then i found a better bit of straight metal than the ruler.

The result is that the engine is comming out. Block needs a skim of about 0.05-0.06 mm. The head seems fine.

I measured it using silkpaper (0.025mm thick) and transfer paper (0.045mm thick) as feeler blades

Bummer mate.

As another check, but won't say how far it's out, you can rub a Shapening Stone over it, just 3 - 5 wipes will be well enough. This will show the high spots.

No disrespect to what you've found here, but it's a lot of work to go to. If it needs skimming, then it needs it, but can I suggest having another set of eyes check it first.
