Cork or paper? With or without a sealant on the mating surfaces? If sealant is used, does it counteract the ability of the gasket (cork or paper) to swell and seal effectively?

Hi
Cork every time. I buy small sheets of 1.5 mm auto gasket cork, cut one out and use it without sealant, as the sealant inhibits the cork from swelling and giving it a tight seal. Never had one leak yet.

I used to use the cork ones dry that Unipart supplied without trouble, lately I've been using Minispares paper gaskets with sealant.  I think the cork ones were better.

Cork or paper. Needs to be of a good thickness.

No sealant, just a smear of grease on each surface.

I use sealant on a paper gasket, a light smear of grease for a cork gasket.

Used a cork gasket with a light smear of Hylotyte Red on both sides. To reduce ‘squeeze out’ of the gasket, torqued to 50 #/lb rather than the minimum of 72 called out in the manual. No leaks. Thanks for the input.

I hope you mean 50 inch pounds!  :D

I like the blue cardboard ones from MiniSpares, I use them dry.

Oops! Yeah it was "/#, big fingers. Never had much luck with paper gaskets-what would be the torque? Just snug enough not to leak? What is the purpose of a smear of grease on the gaskets?

Softens then slightly so they compress easier when tightened, fills any irregularities in the surfaces of the housing and also makes them much easier to remove

I use the brown paper ones from minispares and apply sealant. This works for me

As long as the head gasket is good then you shouldn't have problems with the thermostat gasket :D
