Hi everyone, 

 

As title suggests, i need a little bit of advice on the best way to raise up the drivers door on my 91 Mini City. It currently rubs on the bottom of the frame which scrapes off paint and obviously leads to rust. I am aware that you can adjust the hinges by the A panel but not quite sure how to go about doing that.

You can buy shims to fit between the hinge and body, link below, but it would be worthwhile checking to see if you have any wear on the hinge pins allowing the door to drop.

It’s probably just that your hinges are knackered. Is there much play up and down on the hinges. If so might be worth repairing or replacing

It could also be down to old repairs and poor alignment.
There really is no telling without looking at it.
So you say that the door rubs the body at the rear corner. Is the shut line tight all the way up?
How wide is the shut line at the front of the door?
When you open the door, does it physically drop down and when closing it does it slide up into the striker or close cleanly?
With regards to shims, adding another shim behind the bottom hinge would raise the door at the back but may cause rubbing elsewhere.
You may find that there is a shim behind the top hinge that doesn't need to be there.
If you let us know answers to the above and perhaps even upload a square on photo of the door in the closed position so we can see the shut lines, we may be able to give a more accurate answer.

The 1/4" hinge studs, under the wheel arch, are notorious for shearing. Something to be prepared for when you tackle the job, don't be in a desperate need to use the car!

Looks like the door needs to go up. You could try wedging a suitable lever between the step and the bottom of the door near the front and the slacker the hinge nuts from behind the a panel and the lever the door up before tightening the nuts again. You may need to adjust the striker accordingly.
If tha5 doesn't work, then the door may need to come off to check what if any shims are fitted. If there is one or more on the top hinge, remove one and check the fit after that. It's going to be trial and error.

But the waistline seems to line up, from what i can see anyway.

 

Has it had a new magnum door skin by any chance ?

Zoom in, the swage line is lower, not by a lot but enough to cause issues. Also there has been no mention of a door step change or sill change on that side.

 

All of those could potentially add to the issue.

so i think a question that hasnt been asked has it always done this/from when you got the car    or is it recent   has it had any repairs

I'm with Ben on this ... the door looks to be at a good angle but sat slightly low.

 

If the hinges were spaced incorrectly surely the rubbing would be at the bottom rear corner? The fact that it's a nice clean rub along the centre of the door step would suggest the door's dropped slightly. If the door was originally very close to the step it would need minimal wear to start to make contact. Undo the 4 nuts under the wing and try lifting it a little before re-tightening, a couple of thin wooden wedges might be helpful.

Do the countersunk screws through the hinges look to be not fully home or it that just me?

Its possible they still have the star washers under them which will keep them slightly proud.

I'm probably reading too much in to it because it's what we can see. But, one of 'em doesn't look concentric with the hole. \wonder if the washers could've rusted out and let the door drop a bit?

 

More likely the door was just bolted up where it sat.

my own doors i have the opposite theyre close in the top rear corners  but in line at the waist line with 1 shim behind the top hinge
