About to spray paint our second hand Austin Grille and don't know what finish, Matt, Satin or Gloss Black.

Like the idea of gloss but not sure what they came with?

It was more of a satin Matt finish if I remember correctly.
Some models had nimbus grey too

For ease, I would say a satin finish would look about right

Original finish would have been painted satin finish in black or grey.

Although if you want to do it properly, have it media blasted and then powder coated, as it will last a whole lot longer than just paint. Although as I was special I had mine blasted, powder coated with zinc primer and then painted. 7 years on, apart from the odd chip/touch up to the top coat it still looks as good as the day it was done.

Thanks all for the confirmation,

Satin it will be, just have to order some up.

Love the powder coated idea and i'm sure it would last a lot longer, but i have already stripped and etch primed now ready for paint. The one we have purchased was second hand and in nimbus grey, its three times as heavy has the one that was on the car and has all the blanking parts behind.

Definitely satin is the way to go.

Mine was a lot rustier though, no amount of sanding and repainting stopped the rust bleeding back through in 6 months’ time. But when I did finally get round to having it blasted and powder coated, it was rather a shame it was blasted, as one out of the stripper tank it had a prefect rusty patina.

The plate over the back of the grill along with a small weather shield screwed to the front panel was Austin Rovers ignition weather proofing at the time. But personally the later full engine/rocker cover mounted shields are a lot more effective. The Italian job also used the same grill but without the hole for the bonnet catch as those had internal bonnet releases.
