It's long been a wish of mine to take my Mini to a track day at the Nurburgring. I've been round a few time on a tourist days in my MINI and am worried my existing 3.9 FD Mini engine is not a good match for such a long track.

If you had to build an engine with only one goal, to make it round the ring for a whole day, what spec would you build?

Few rules:

  • No engine swaps, must be an A/A+/MPI block
  • Must support crank fired timing (existing ECU)
  • Work with my existing front mount rad & electric water pump
  • Must be a dog box, ideally A+ rod style
  • Points for originality

The car will be taken to the track on a trailer so not got to worry about light switch clutches or poor idle speeds.

I've considered a KAD16v with 74mm pistons on their 4 speed dog box - not sure on FD. Like the idea of a similar spec EFI 8 port.

Genuine query, all discussion welcome.

I don't follow, are you saying you would not build an A series for the nurburgring?

As you know the 'standard' 1275 came in many varieties over the years, not sure I know the version you're referring to. Do you mean a 'standard' race engine with DCOE?

correct i would not build an A for the Nordshleife.

But if i was going to spec one then it would be more of a basic rally spec build with torque and then spec a higher than rally spec final drive.as in 3.1 or higher. there is no way i would want to sit at over 7k on the 12 mile straight.

i have say that it is a place that holds zero interest to me to drive in my Mini. i might pop round in in my Swift though one day as it is just up the road from me.

Engine swap would make a lot of sense though. More gears, more power, more reliability & MUCH cheaper.

I did a lot of racing on the Ring in any condition and I feel the 3.9FD is just right. Not so good on the long straight back to S-F but good enough for the rest.
