i'm fitting an engine with a pre-engaged starter motor, so the battery cable is going to have be longer. any suggestions what length to go for.

Minispares lists two options:

 

127" for inertia and 134" for pre-engaged starters

so you are redoing the who car wiring?

just run a cable from the wing solenoid as show in many posts in here.

I,m fitting a new front end loom to my '68 mk11, it was in a pretty poor condition. I had already fitted an alternator so I bought a mk3 loom as it doesn't include the control box wiring. looking good so far.
