I'm using the winter to sort a few bits on the mini, I'm currently working round the interior which I wish to full strip then paint before fitting a bolt in cage. I intend to cut out the rear companion bins before I spray the inside. My question is if I cut the bins out and spring/summer roll round before I get the cage fitted is the car still OK too use? Or does the cage need to be in for structural reasons?
Cheers
It will be fine as long as no one hits you in the side, the rear pocket is an important part of strengthening the B post.
Like all things in life its a risk and you have to decide how likely it is to be an issue.
Personally I wouldn't remove them even with the cage, in a mini you need all the help you can get in an accident.

Why do you want a cage? Are you building for competition? Otherwise it's just some big bars you and you passengers can split there head open on in an accident...
Best advice is not to fit a cage unless it is required for motor sport.
