The 948 cam from the 997 cooper is a bit better. The Evo 001 is spritely and a 731 is sporty.

The subject states that he has a 998.
Really it depends on what you want to do with it... Trackday usage, fast road, longer trips. Depending on the usage you would choose a camshaft. Also it depends on the cylinder head. If you're using a standard one, it doesn't make sense to fit a very hot cam...

.
Also in the future add a stage 3 head..
So as I have the engine apart was thinking of upgrading the camshaft.

I ran a 266 in a 998 and found it great. Had a stage 3 head and twin SUs. Was very good and nippy with a 3.44FD.
I too am thinking of the 266 in a 998 with a stage 3 head. Do you think u could drop to a 3.1 FDR and still have enough low end?

The 998 loves to rev, even more so with a better head so it’s counter productive.
The 3.1 will reduce the acceleration but will rev lower at high speed.
If a quieter cruising speed is what you’re after then you’d be better off going with a 2.9 amd really killing the acceleration. 3.4 is a happy medium.
I’d even consider running a 3.7 in a 998 if I built another one. But it wouldn’t be a motorway car.

The why would be because here in Detroit, it feels like you have to get on the highway to go anyway. I dont want to really kill the accel so I'll prob take your advice and stick with the 3.4.
i'm young and still have hearing to give at the high revs

when i was asking for cam advice kent 256/266 was a popular recommendation, but I settled on the minispares EVO1 cam and Im very happy.
Ultimately it depends on what you want. EVO1 is on paper a bit much for a 998 but i find it quite lively (other than the somewhat lumpy idle - solved by a higher idle, which I need since my car has air conditioning)
