no matter how much I adjust my hif44 it always runs very rich ,ive tried for days turning the mixture screw out and in to no avail plugs are always sooted up black as hell , also when I get a smooth idle it lasts for 5 minutes then stalls out , time for a new carb as im getting well hacked of with it now any ideas b4 I buy a new or reconditioned carb cheers

The mixture adjustment mechanism is mechanically very simple. Take the dashpot and piston out then observe the jet whilst you adjust the mixture screw. If you can't see the jet moving up and down then something is broken but it won't be anything complicated or hard to fix but you'll need to remove the carb and have a look in the float chamber to see what's going on. If the jet does move then your problem isn't with the mixture adjustment mechanism.

yes it moves up and down mate il need to look into it further

wont even fire up now got plenty sparks at plugs but seems fuel aint getting through , fuel pump is pumping so at least that's ok , maybe float is sticking ,jees you gota love these little cars lol,

carb now in bits will order new float valve ,ive also had a look at carb needle which is AAA? is this the right needle for 1275 metro engine with lcb no other mods other than kn filter in std airbox

try BDL , I have found it useable in most pretty standard 1275 with lab and k&n and was standard with mg1275's

yes checked all intake joins think its the AAA needle that's fitted in the hif44 should be bdl im sure

Personally I wouldn't change the needle without changing the jet too. Both do wear and quite rapidly with the "bias" spring on the needle. usually means the needle and jet end up with a flat bit, and hence no longer round. This pushes the needle towards the engine side more and allows fuel to "leak" past the back of the needle. (hope that waffle makes sense)
