hi there

my 998cc 1988 auto mini city has gradually started this problem, that when i put the gears into drive or reverse it either tries to cut out or when it does decide to move then it struggles.

now trying to sort this problem out tonight we have tried to adjust the idle on the carb and now it wont even turn over. when it is in neutral.

we have made a loop on the solonoid and it does kick in but once its kicked in , it reverts back to the original problem and wants to cut out, or very jumpy when try to reverse or move forward.

i turned the engine off and removed the loop and it will not start again.

does anyone have a clue what this could be or have they had this problem themselves?

many thanks

With regard to the engine not turning over: If the gear selector is not in either Park (if you have one) or neutral it won't start. If it is in either I'd check to make sure the gear selector lever is making correct contact with the starter inhibitor switch. There's a way of adjusting the gear selector cable if you have a suitable workshop manual.

The drive problem could be a number of things.

How many miles has the car done?

When was it last serviced?

Will have a look at the gear selector

The car has done 44,000 miles and serviced it just before Christmas oil change

Then did the plugs , dizzy cap , rotor arm & leafs last night

The "trying to die" has nothing to do with the inhibitor switch which is clearly working as the engine starts.....

This sounds like a convertor stator issue to me.

Can you roll the car (safely) and then engage the gear in which you are rolling  (forward or revers) if you can and then it works ok until you next try to stop it is convertor
