hello

i need some advice for my car  998cc mini

just for using around town   and small journeys  no more than a 30/40km  jouerny

anyway my car has a mini spares stage one kit

new minispares lightended vertro clutch /flywheel

electronic distributor  .

so i have the engine out for a good rebuild

oil pump all bearing s etc

im so undecided for the camshaft   a sw5 swiftune or a kent 266

taking in mind i will be doing a engine bore to +10  flat top pistons and in the future a calver stage 3 head

so what do you people think is the best cam for my needs taking in consideration fuel and emmissions

thanks for any advice

Kent 256 is a good all rounder for what you want;  very good fuel economy and increase in torque right through the rev range.

Piper 255. Aim for 9.75cr when you get cylinder head. Lovely

I have an SW5-07 in mine. 295 head (skimmed for 9.5CR), 3.44 diff, lightened fly, minispares stage 1 (HS4 carb), recurved electric dizzy. Overall, i am pleased with the setup. Idles nice and smooth (turned up a tad to 1-1.1k) and pulls from idle to ~6k (haven't gone past this). No seat of your pants feeling when you pop on cam, but power is there. Easy to drive and great on both backroads and highways. I have no experience with other cams except stock A+, but i made all the changes at once, so it was a night and day improvement over stock A+ 998. I am curious about the Kent 246 and 256 for more lower down torque. Good Luck with the build.

I used to have a 998 in the 1990s with a Kent 256 and a Minispares stage 3 head as they called it back then with a 3.44:1 final drive.  I used the vehicle for pizza delivery work so spent a lot of time buzzing around the city I worked in.  Great little engine, plenty fast enough for city work, economical, idled smoothly at 800 rpm, could rev to 6000 rpm, very fast from 0 to 45 mph, good fun out of town too but was never going to set the world on fire.  Would also cruise all day at 80 mph when necessary.  Overall fuel economy 40 mpg.

The Evo 001 is very good in a 998, especially when fitted with a better head (ideally a 12G295) and improved inlet & ex. system.

I like the Minispares EVO1, it's similar to the Kent 266....

The problem I have with cam selection questions is that there are so many companies trying to make a profit by selling 'their' cams that there is a lot of confusion caused.

For a competition car, where a few tenths of a second per lap or a second per special stage mile can be critical, then final selection is very important, but for a road car where such time improvements mean little, then selection between what are similar cams is just confusing.

You have to ask what you are trying to actually achieve. Remember, the cam only determines where the power and torque are delivered. More power can be achieved with a narrower power/torque band and gear ratios are also an important consideration.

For a road 998 you will probably be best with something like an Evo001 and a really good head at a CR of c.10:1. Gearing would best be a 3.44:1 FDR with standard gear ratios. An optimised induction & exhaust system is important and for good throttle response, my personal like is a pair of HS2's on a nicely matched inlet manifold.

At the end of the day what you are most probably seeking is a 'friendly' engine with good mid-range torque.
