If it is a genuine John Cooper S conversion it should have a numbered certificate and a numbered plate screwed to the crossmember just to the right of the driver's seat. The Si pack, as it was called, was introduced in 1991 and consisted of an exchange cylinder head "balanced, ported and polished" and a Janspeed exhaust system. Those were the main items, which, it was claimed, increased power to 77PS and 108 Nm torque.

Included in the pack was an oil cooler kit, a new ratio fan pulley and fan belt, an alloy rocker cover (like the MG Metro one) and a pair of Cooper S side decals.

The Si head was based on the S head developed by Cooper and Janspeed for the 1990 and 1991 Rover Cooper carb models. This was in cooperation with Rover so that they could be covered by Rover warranty. The Si version was actually produced by MiniSport from the start. Janspeed only made the carb versions.

The power output appears to have been overstated in 1991 as in 1993/4 it was quoted as 74bhp, when an upgraded version, Si Plus, was introduced with a rating of 77bhp. This was achieved with larger inlet valves and the addition of hi lift rockers.

Sometime around 1995 the pack had a further upgrade option taking the power up to 80-84bhp. This was achieved by modifications to the induction and management systems. This is similar to the version that the Cooper Car Company now sells through MiniSport though the air filter and exhaust systems have changed.

A Monte Carlo with an S conversion would be a fantastic car to have. Enjoy it.
