Hello Guys and Girls,

I'm looking to replace the foam in front seats of my mini, they are reclining single post headrest seats in my 1989 mini but I'd like to keep the original covers intact and reuse them. Is it possible to remove the covers without destroying them in order to replace the foam? If so, does another have any hints and tips on how to do this? Drivers seat has pretty much collapsed so think its time for some TLC!

I've noticed there are some metal clips on the bottom part of the seat, is it just a case of removing these and simply lifting the cover off?

Thanks,

James.

Hi James,

It's just a case of removing the knobs/handles and removing the metal clips you've mentioned. The clips are barbed and can damage/rip the vinyl though so be careful if you're re-using the covers. When I did mine, I used a small screwdriver to open the clips up slightly to ease removal and limit any damage. You can squeeze these closed again with a pair of pliers but I just bought new ones as they were pretty cheap.

On these seats you also have a hard plastic flat peice that inserts thru the foam, then rotates flat again on the inside of the foam. That's what gives the cushions shape. You'll find it right where the solid colored material meets the striped part, both on the backrest and squab.

To remove the cover you have to rotate the plastic  and insert it back thru the foam. Then reverse the procedure to put the cover back on. The plastic tab is about 4 inches long, and it's the last thing to remove and the first back in again when you re-install the cover.
