I've managed to sort out the issue but still couldn't find the source. As previously stated every time I put the main beam on the spotlights would come on and would only switch off if I switched the lights off however, I had a H4 HID kit lying around which I had been given so I thought I'd give them a try. Works perfect, side, dipped and main beam and spots now switch on and off when they should.

So now I have not only fully working lights but HID.

HID lights are illegal on classic minis as HID lights must have levelling motors and also lens wash...

Did you have to put a separate earth wire for the HID box? The HID's use less current and might be the reason they work. Also, do you have main and dipped lights? Some kits have only one bulb/element.

I'll have to see how it gets on when it goes in for its MOT in a couple of weeks. If it fails on them I'll have to go back to the drawing board.

There is a separate earth from the HID's but I spliced them into the existing earth and works fine.

Usually the HID headlights are 35 Watts, halogens are 55 Watts. It seems to me that you do not have a good connection to the body for your headlights earth, or the earth wires for the headlights are undersized on your new loom. Good enough for 35 Watts but not good enough for 55 Watts.
