Hi
I'm removing my clutch .
(Doing an engine rebuild).
Can you guys refresh my memory on the position to take clutch of without the primary gear ring falling and blocking .
I have the engine at TDC .
The slots where the bolt is are vertical
Can I take it off like this or is it safer horizontal
Or can I take the bolt of as it is in the pic with the slots vertical then turn crank so crank slots are horizontal?

I didnt know there was any special process about taking the clutch off, i jammed the flywheel,Took out the big bolt washer and thick like washer/drift  out,  puller into the flywheel and crank in it till the flywheel clutch assembelly explodes off.

The slots should be horizontal as per just about every manual out there.

 

and use something to lock the flywheel.

As Nick says,but regarding the other part of your question, you can remove the bolt with the flywheel anywhere it happens to be as long as you turn it to slot  horizontal before you start pulling

Or in other words... with all 4 piston level with each other, ie 1/2 way down/up the bore

 

And when you reinstall it make sure you have piston number 1 at TDC

Remember to take the washer out.. seen so many cranks ruined by this....

I will also grease the bolts on the flywheel puller,
I heard it helps

Old used shell bearings are great to lock the flywheel...

Greasing the bolts will only help if the bolts will hold the tension, have you looked at Guessworks gearboxes puller ? the 3 main criteria with the Guessworks puller are:-

1) large diameter thread with a very fine pitch spreads the load and makes it easier to turn

2) High tensile bolts, these will allow for higher loads to be applied.

3) Ball bearing centre pin reduces the loads that need to be applied to rotate the centre bolt.

 

These are what makes it a great puller, the normal aftermarket items have none of the above.
