The price depends on how bad it is and how much needs to be replaced. Only when you tear into it will you understand the work that needs doing and the parts that need to be replaced. min £4k+for a stock rebuild of head block, clutch gearbox and axillaries. If you want it taken out and refitted easy add another £1 to £1.5k

For working out a rough price for many jobs,........................... Find the cost of the materials..............treble it to include labour, snags and profit.

ACDodd, I'm glad to see you post those numbers, I had a guy ask me to rebuilt a Healy Sprite motor, said he was prepared to spend up to $1500. I told him that wouldn't do it but tore it down to give him a complete estimate - with head, block and crank work I came up with $3500, about £2700 at the current exchange rate. That didn't involve any performance work, just a basic rebuild to good, reliable  stock spec. Less than a Mini as I wasn't rebuilding the trans too.....

I don't know where people get the idea that you can rebuild an engine - properly - for no money.

Machine shop work alone was $1000, about the same for parts and that left $1500 for labor - 30 hours total at my inexpensive labor rate. I probably spend 2/3 of that just cleaning and repainting parts, let alone dry build assembly, measuring all clearances and so on.

I paid £4k for a brand new 1275 engine and box in 2012 so I woud agree with those prices, at the time it seemed a very good deal

They are also very highly respected by those in the Mini scene.

Yep! Rod built V2.0 of my engine and its still going strong! I was pleasantly surprised by the bill considering the amount of stuff I asked them to do!

Another for Southam. I had an S block acid dipped, bored, crank checked over and ground, new cam bearings, rods checked and balanced, head supplied, new pistons, clutch and a full balance for about £2100.  The pistons and crank was fitted for me.  I built the engine up from that.  Lovely people, Rod and Simon.  They are busy people though.

Video of the engine running in my sig :-)

My vote is for Bromsgrove Engine Services. They have been featured a few times on TV, but that is not why I choose them. When you phone up, you talk straight to either Keith or Greg, they answer any questions with great knowledge, zero bull ****, won’t upsell you anything, you get what you pay for. The only issue is they are so popular there’s a few months wait, depending how busy they are.

I sent them my A+ 1275 and they did this:

New larger 35.6mm inlet valves
New exhaust valves - same size
Fully balanced
Newman Cams 270 billet cam
10.5:1 compression

Fitted new water pump, oil pump, plugs, verto clutch
Nural Cooper S pistons

Block decked
Heavy duty bearings
Everything chemically cleaned
Head flowed, new unleaded seats
steel duplex timing chain

Recon gearbox and strap, new bearings, new bulk rings for synchromesh, I added a centre oil pick up, as suggested by this forum.

Added a 11th head stud.

£2200, plus £160 for it to be balanced.

I’m not near them, so I found a cheap heavy duty courier £40 each way, I just had to strap it to a pallet.

Over a year later, having done 1000 miles and sorted out my dizzy issues ( obv nothing to do with the build) I’m very happy, got it dyno’d at 70BHP at the wheels.

RACE Engineering in Chorley, Lancashire, Jim did a great job on my GT engine 01254831644.

Great bloke, very helpful and won't rip you off, let's face it if he builds engines for people he races against
