My MK1 has been turning over but refusing to start. I narrowed it down to a fuel supply issue, and so removed the SU electric fuel pump for testing on the bench.

When I connect power to it, the solenoid activates and retracts the diaphragm. When I disconnect the power the solenoid releases the diaphragm. However should the diaphragm not be continuously pumping up and down when the power is connected?

It’s an electronic version, so no points to go wrong. Any thoughts? Thanks!

It could be the Inlet Tube or the Valve inside it on the Suction Side is blocked or collapsed. That will cause it to do just this.
