I've just started de-rusting the front bulkhead on my car and there is rust behind the bonnet mounts. It only appears to be surface rust so I'm not inclined to cut them off.

I'll feed some deox gel in there to remove the rust but want to take the remaining paint off first.

Are there any ways of sanding in between to remove the rust?

Get a spot grit blaster if you have a compressor.

If the mounts are being pushed off the surface the only way is to remove the mount but yours looks just about OK.

You are deep into a bit of metal work there so if needs be it`s not the end of the world to fabricate a mount .

Or this https://www.amazon.c...N/dp/B006YLZ3HE

as it`s a bit more useful, messy but beats any rust potion but remember steel under a microscope is porous and those little veins go a long way so your favorite rust potion afterwards for good measure.

Any doubts remove and replace or it will come back to bite you in the ass 5 years down the road.

Or as in Project Paddy you can remove them, remove / replace any rusted parts then refit them.

I thought about this some more following Sonikk's post.

My plan is to put in some self tapping screws before removing them and then drill out the spot welds. This should ensure they go back in the correct place.

Self tappers are fine, skin pins would be better but its all down to what you have available. The other thing to consider is if you find the bulkhead pitted like mine was.

Then you need to carefully mark out the existing spot welds with lines that extend past the material you need to cut out or take careful measurements. That way you can ensure everything should go back to its correct place when you weld in fresh steel on the bulkhead.

There's no pitting behind the brackets, so looks like I can get away with just putting them back on. After putting some deals gel on.Attached File  1581872622214-1077546523.jpg   75.94K   1 downloads

The brackets have cleaned up okay as well.

Are the extra holes on the brackets for adjusting the bonnet?

If you are happy with the bulkhead then fair play. Personally and i mean personally i would replace and be done with it.

yes but if I replace these areas then I will have to replace others which will then result in me just replacing the bulk head in its entirety, which would then pretty much just leave the roof as the original part of the car.

Then I should have just bought a new heritage shell.

A line just be drawn. ?
