Hi folk.

Seller had the above car advertised but only one picture. Sussex based.

I enquired and was told if its a quick sale he'll sell for £4700 and received more pictures to my email address, at this point it becomes clear the car is far superior for my budget and also car was now in Scotland due to work commitments. Im thinking is this my good luck or a con.

Seller wanting to sell through Ebay protected vehicle thing with protected 5 day money return. Sounded promising but gut feeling something is off. Even included a link which looked genuine until I looked for the same page on my own ebay page and it was different.

Buyer sends me pictures of his log book, mot and passport. Who does this? So at this point Im thinking maybe it is genuine.

The pictures had no identifying info attached such as date taken etc which is odd and needs deliberate removal.

HPI check is clear and vin number matches.

Rang mot garage who say they havent motd an old mini for 10yrs.

I suggested I get the car independently inspected at my cost, I asked for a picture of the sills and back seat (as these werent included) seller has now ghosted me for 4 days.

Googling the reg it was a magazine feature and such a sorted modified car it would be £10-15k Im guessing.

So I have been given pictures of mot, log book, passport, hpi and vin and offer to buy through a protected program. I think a lot of people would fall for this. My wife said she would (she isnt a car person).

Im 100% if Id passed over almost 5k, thatd be the last I would have seen of it.

Anyway, who ever owns the real genuine car - beautiful!

I had a nearly identical experience with a motorcycle purchase. It was a sophisticated con attempt.

Could be worth contacting the police. If it's a scam they might have got some info off the genuine owner by pretending to be a potential buyer so there might be something that can be traced.

I can't think of any good reason to copy your V5 to a potential buyer, anyone else?

eBay don’t do a protected anything.

do you do Facebook? If yes look for the EBay Vehicle Scam Alerts page and join it. You will see how big the issue is and what common cons are.

Do you have a link or screenshot?

Did the second page of the eBay ad look something like this below, as this person has been around for years trying to scam people:

Seriously people if you cannot touch the car run away. Ebay is awash with scammers.

They have tons of accounts, and probably hack accounts too to look genuine.
