I recently aquired a Crypton (?) Check Mate with Rover Microcheck system from a garage closing down which seems to plug ECU in a similar way to a Sykes Pickavant ACR system.

I've not used it yet but unlike my ACR2 it comes with a pretty detailed manual for use. It would appear to offer pretty much the same diagnostics as the ACR but it's first time I've seen an Air By-Pass Screw mentioned, let alone using it to setup the stepper motor.

I'm intrigued to know if any folks out there have knowledge of the Microcheck system and/or anything about adjusting the Air By-Pass screw? I didn't know it existed.

I have a spare throttle body so I've taken the lose core plug out that protects it and its definitely there (photo)! I would think it nigh on impossible to remove the core plug and adjust it in situ though, not a lot of space between the back of the throttle body and the bulkhead so I'm a tad doubtful but seeing it all in black & white seems to make it real.

I've included a few photos of the manual that mention the screw and the Check Mate kit.

Anyone know anything?

The air bypass screw is for the basic setting of the carburator.normally it was done by the factory. In germany only in some situations a few car mecanics with special equipment were allowed to change the setting. They had the equipment and had the plugs to cover the whole again. The plugs had different colors so you could see if they were original or changed.

I wouldn`t touch this screw!

But can you scan your booklet and puplish it here?

Thanks. Yes, I wont be touching that screw, not unless I'm feeling very brave/stupid. I've long since learned not to mess around with an SPI system unless its absolutely clear there's a fault that needs to be fixed.

From what I can tell from other mentioned online of it, the Crypton Check Mate and Microcheck docs & cards which fit into the Check Mate were what Rover garages used (there were other systems too). If that is the case then this could well be the 'special equipment' you mention.

Covering/protecting plug isn't difficult to remove or put back but there isn't a lot of space to do that when it's all on the car.

The manual also mentions that the Check Mate can guide the setup of the 'screw that should not be moved' which is interesting, but the manual doesn't give details of what that is.

The manual appears to be up to 1994 and covers all of the models Rover sold with MEMS injection not just Mini. I think I also have an earlier version of the manual and cards in the set. Happy to scan and share the manuals here when I get a chance.

I'm going to plug the Check Mate into my SPI at some point to see what it does etc. I'm familiar with ACR & pods so if does anything at all, it'll be interesting to compare. I'll report back on that too.
