So, why does it have the big, ugly rear lights?

The Italian Innocenti Mini used the larger rear lights long before the UK Mk4 Mini adopted them as standard......the larger rear lights (usually with built in reversing lights) also fit the same bodywork aperture as the Mk2 & Mk3 Minis so are an easy swap or upgrade.

My first car was Mk2 (1968) Mini 850 and that had the the bigger lights.
