So I'm at the point to start removing some rusty pannels looking at spot weld drill bits seems to be two types, the normal looking drill bit type and one with teeth like a mini hole saw which is the best from other people's experiences.
Cheers ?

Ive used the second type - mini hole saw with a spring loaded point. Worked really well to be fair, pretty straight forward, but I think its better suited for metal work that wont get re-welded/repaired. I used it to remove the lip on my bonnet to convert to a mk1 grille from the mk3/later types. They dont last extremely long and after drilling out all the spots on the bonnet I had to flip the cutter one time as it was getting dull.

I am using the first type. Flat head with a centering pin.

Works very well and does drill nice round holes with very minimal burrs.

I have two of them, one quite cheap (less than 10€), the other one from Würth, for a little more, which seems to work better.

Then there are some for 30+€ available, but I can't say anything on them.

The first one is curently reshaped as it wore out quite quickly (made a lot of holes too...) and it's about 5 quids too recut it.

I don't know about the second type, they seem qualitatilely better,

Hope this helps.

Gilles

I use these ones. https://www.dtc-uk.c...weld-drill.html

They’re pricey but very effective and can be sharpened on a good square bench grinder stone. Always centre punch weld and then go in with the Dormer bit with a little cutting oil on it and keep the bit square to the panel.

its worth gettiing the cobalt one like linked above by tuppers,

Ive found they last well if you use them in a cordless on low speed so they dont get hot.

Another vote for the cobalt ones, the hole saw ones tend to be quite fragile if the spot weld is on an edge (like a mini wing for example).  I used to find they broke reguarly whereas the cobalt ones are really tough and last for ages.
