My 72 clubman is making a knocking noise.

Under hard acceleration I hear a knocking from the front of the car.

Under hard acceleration and cornering the knocking is a lot louder!!!

If I rev the car at a standstill it doesn't knock.

So I am guessing that the 65,000 mile engine is ok.

Should I be looking at the suspension first or where would the best places to start looking at be?

Could it be the poly bushes? What are these and are they difficult to replace?

Any help is appreciated.

several things come to mind. but more expert people here will be able to help you better than me.

several things can knock on throttle:

- it can be silent block, either from engine support or one of the steady arms. take a look at the top one (on mine it's left of the head)

- it can also be one of the pot joint, between gearbox and wheels that gets worn out.

for the top one, you can simply try to shake the engine by hand (when cold and not running of course) and see if something is wrong there.if it knocks, then you have an issue with silent blocs, bushing, and such

for the later type, you can lift a front wheel, car is not powered but 1st gear is engaged. and try to rotate the wheel. you will see then how much play you have in there.

this is my humble suggestion but I am pretty sure more seasoned forum members will have a more accurate idea.

cheers !

Check the engine stabiliser bushes, grab the engine and give it a good shake. Check the jet assembly on the bottom of the carb for witness Mark's and isn't bent. Then check the differential free play

Check subframe mounts to toe board and for cracking of the metal around them.
