Radiator Bracket Into Thermostat Mount- What Bolt? + Rusty Earth Connection In Boot

Best Answer GraemeC , 02 April 2020 - 05:36 PM

Try 3/4 x 1/2" unc from memory for the radiator, secondly I can't see a problem drilling a clean hole make sure you clean the paint off on the inside and once fitted coat with copper grease

I presume you mean 1/2” A/F (ie 1/2” spanner)?

Which would be 5/16” UNC threaded screw.

Hello

Mini is 1990 1275 Carb.

Does anyone know what bolt goes into the radiator bracket as shown? Attached File  rad.jpg   65.83K   2 downloads

The thermostat mounting is PEM10036. I have asked all of the usual mini shops, and none of them seem to know. The exploded parts diagrams do not show the bolt/stud.

(I feel like I'm always asking for bolts on this!)

Another unrelated question is related to the earth bolt in the boot. Picture is shown Attached File  battery.jpg   93.05K   1 downloads.

As you can see, the earth strap needs replaced, so I bought a new one. When removing the bottom nut, the metal of the boot between started to tear. I will patch this hole with a welder later on at some point (I don't have access to one now).

My question is, will I just drill a hole somewhere that I can find thick/solid metal in the boot? Has anyone else done this? It should be straightforward enough.

Thanks in advance!

Alasdair

That sounds big,

You could clean up the battery earth area and sandwich between a couple of penny washers

Doesn't the boot earth strap bolt through to a captive nut ?

Doesn't the boot earth strap bolt through to a captive nut ?

Yep - the nut is captive in a bracket. It is loose, but shouldn’t turn (or be turned) which is why the floor has torn.

(That is unless it has been changed previously).

I’ve never understood why they didn’t fit a proper, welded nut here - it would provide a much better earth point to the shell.

Hi all

Thank you for your replies.

I was at the mini last night (it's at a remote garage) and measured the inside of the threads in the thermostat housing. This was around 7mm, so a 5/16” UNC threaded screw sounds about right. I'll get one ordered.

As for the boot, I managed to wangle the whole bolt/nut assembly out (see attached). Graeme is correct, there was a captive nut, however this was turning inside the weak/thin metal housing.

I may try what Ethel suggested and use some big penny washers until I can get to a welder. It would be easier to clean up the area which is already clean for a start!

Thanks again!

Trying to think where'd be easiest to pinch a 5/16unc from to confirm that thread - clutch cover probably?

Hi Ethel

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve ordered the bolts but they haven’t arrived yet.

If they don’t arrive before I’m next at the mini, I’ll pinch one from the clutch cover to check.

Hi all

Just for completeness, the bolt which fitted into the thermostat housing was 5/16 UNC x 1" long.

The penny washer idea also worked with the earth- until I can weld the floor properly.
