So, I've had a noisey tappet since i bought the car a year ago, 94 cooper spi. Had the head off and fitted 1.5.1 roller rockers from minisport thinking this would improve the noise, but NO it's still there.

Doesn't matter how many times I adjust the clearances, rockers aren't hitting the cover as the noise is there when the cover is off.

I've done the screwdriver to ear thing and it's 8 and 7 that are making the noise, 8 is loudest.

There was a little sideways movement on 8, added some shims but didn't solve the issue.

Does anyone have suggestions as it's driving me up the wall, could it be the Cam or the followers?

You check with an oil pressure gauge, fitted in the front left hand side of the block, where the oil pressure light switch is.

People used to think that on long right hand bends, when the oil in the sump got swept to the radiator end of the gearbox and the oil pump sucked air, that the rattling noise that they heard was the tappets.

It wasn't, it was the big ends.

Ask on here if there are any experienced mechanics near you, who would give you a second opinion.

It might be worth trying an engine stethoscope ( https://www.ebay.co....n8AAOSwXHhdmfFa ) to determine where the noise is coming from. It should go without saying, be very careful while using one of these on a running engine: HT leads, moving parts, etc., but it might help in isolating the source.

Pretty sure it's coming from the to of the engine and it's constant at rest or driving, will get an oil pressur eguage....

Put a small blob of white paint on the pushrods to make sure they rotate when the engine is running and measure the lift on the offending valves against the others.

It`s a good idea to fit an oil pressure gauge as it`s too late when the oil light comes on.

great suggestions on the push rods, i'm borrowing an oil pressure gauge in the coming weeks so will update how that goes, unfortunately dont have a dial gauge to check the lift, no idea where to get one either...?
