Starter Relay Wiring Help!

Best Answer GraemeC , 16 April 2020 - 07:59 PM

Ignition Switch

brown - from starter motor solenoid (provides power to the ignition switch)
white - to fuse box (provides power from switch when in ignition position (second click) to ignition fed circuits)
red/white - to starter relay (yes - provides power to starter relay when key in start position)

green/white - to fuse box (yes - provides to accessory circuits when key in acc position (first click))

Starter Relay (yellow square box)
brown/red - to starter motor solenoid (yes - becomes live when key is turned and relay operates)
black - to earth point (yes)

brown - from starter solenoid - (provides power to the relay)
red/white - to ignition switch (yes - triggers the relay when key is turned)

(so black and white/red operate the relay, allowing power to go from the brown to the brown/red)

Ignition Coil
- black - to distributor (possibly - depends on ignition type, usually white/black if points ignition)
+ white - from fuse box

Starter motor solenoid - (on top of starter motor -not seperate item)
thick brown

brown/blue   -- all 3 here connected together

brown

brown connected to big spade (NO - should be the other end of the brown/red from the solenoid)

there is a smaller spade - not sure what goes to this ?  (Should be a white/yellow if you have ballast ignition system)

trying to get mini started again after fitting new front loom
i've connected up what i thought was everything, i get ignition light on, but on final key turn nothing.
I assume i need a starter relay, the old loom had one (yellow square box), i forgot to take enough pictures of old loom in-situ!

But i'm not 100% sure on how to wire up - even having looked at every post i can and every wiring diagram i can

So this is what i have:

Ignition Switch
brown - to starter motor solenoid
white - to fuse box
red/white - to starter relay ?

green/white - to fuse box

Starter Relay (yellow square box)
brown/red - to starter motor solenoid
black - to earth point

brown - not sure where this goes
red/white - to ignition switch ?

Ignition Coil
- black - to distributor
+ white - from fuse box ?

Starter motor solenoid - (on top of starter motor -not seperate item)
thick brown

brown/blue   -- all 3 here connected together

brown

brown connected to big spade

there is a smaller spade - not sure what goes to this ?

Any help in fixing the above would be appreciated, let me know if you need more info..

thank you

Hello,  Wiring - always a joy.

I believe the red/white wire goes from the ignition to the starter solenoid.

Brown is usually unswitched +12v

The solenoid is essentially a heavy duty relay to pass the maximum current from the battery to the starter.

I know I don't have a relay between the ignition and the solenoid.

mine looks like this;

I know yours is't the same but the circuit should be similar.

I don't have a coil fitted so can't advise you there.

MrE812 - when you say - Brown is usually unswitched +12v

what do you mean - brown from where to where ?

this is my issue - everyone has something different -you have a different solenoid to me
i know the wires should be similar - but without seeing like for like i dont know if it is correct

plus you have no coil - i do

and i have a relay - which i'm still not 100% sure i need to use

cal844  - cheers that confirms what i have - white wire from ignition key goes to coil + :) one sorted

Thankyou Graeme C
yout explanation of what each wire does and the "NO - should be the other end of the brown/red from the solenoid"
that helped me alot, mini just fired up and running for first time in 6months since i started strippting the old loom out

so many thanks, :)
