Hi everyone,

Possibly a long shot, but worth asking before I continue to make do with my existing cowling. Does anyone have both upper and lower parts of a Mk3 steering column cowling. As part number suggests Mk3 with ignition barrel running horizontally across the top of the column. Rather than the much more common Mk4-6 type where the barrel is located to the right hand side of the column at an angle. It has to ideally have the locating pins intact on the lower half, with no major abrasions or cracks to the plastic especially around the screw holes. As it obviously has to be better than my current cowling. Let me know what you have as it may be of some help depending...

Thanks, Curtis

Finding one with ALL the plastic pins intact will be hard.

Why not do what i did -buy one that's crack free, cut off any remaining plastic pins, drill a hole & insert small pieces of metal rod cut too length (make sure you set a depth limit on your drill, i forgot to do this on the first one i refurbished-  Grrrr)

I knew the chances of finding one with intact pins would be minimal, but I’m more than willing to hunt around for a little while depending on what pops up. But what you mention is definitely an option, even with my existing one to be honest. So may be worth a go.

I have no idea what they tend to go for, as I’ve only just began looking for one. But the one you have pictured I believe is the left hand drive version (stalk on left of column rather than right) which I’m unsure if it uses a different part number? I can only seem to find 18g8803 listed online and nothing for lhd. Obviously the differences between lhd/rhd slim down my chances somewhat.

Blast! you got there first -i noticed that last night but was too tired to respond.

& that steering column has got a Magnatex (Neiman-Tex) 'safety lock' ignition switch fitted, i prefer the Lowe & Fletcher version.

Being a LHD version wouldn't have bothered me as i modified mine to accept the twin stalk MPI switch-gear (don't even go there!, it involves far too much work).

by the way: the part number for LHD MK2/3 cowls is 18g8799.

Always found the Somerford site useful for looking up original Mk3 part numbers, not that it makes them any easier to find.  https://www.somerfordmini.co.uk/

You’re obviously very much in the know with these columns/cowlings and steering locks. Some really helpful info! I must admit the Somerford link is an oversight on my part, as I’m always on their site for references and buying odds and sods. The MPi stalk conversion sounds interesting, not to go too far off subject but have you got any pictures? Don’t think I’d ever have that much patience to convert the switch gear to that extent but sounds very interesting all the same!

Correct it is off a LHD car. Did not think that they might have been different. But it would give you the opportunity to have the indicators on the same side as the daily ;)

An indicator stalk on the left hand side on a RHD vehicle is unnatural & perverse & whoever came up with the idea should be drawn, hanged, & quartered (& yes, that is the way it should be written)

If you are selling it & you have the key for the ignition lock it's still perfect for anyone wanting to fit a later twin stalk set-up (hopefully the earlier version with the indicator stalk on the RH side), it doesn't take much work to modify it in that manner & you still get the benefit of it (almost) looking correct on your Mk3.

I know I have one that I removed from an early 72 auto.

Just had a very quick rummage in the shed but can only find one part. Once we are able to get about and about I need to take a load a rubbish from the shed down to the tip, the rest should turn up then.

Thanks guys, sorry for the delay in my reply. I’ll definitely be interested in both as and when you’re able to sort out what you have. Let me know!

Thanks, Curtis

Thanks, I had seen this and managed to miss it. But thanks for the link!

I’m currently awaiting a reply about a cowling on its own but still hunting for a relatively intact one, if anyone has anything?

Cheers
