Hi All,

Can anyone advise how to fit the mk1 rear number plate holder to a mk3 bootlid. Its looks like the hinged brackets were screwed into pre drilled holes in a mk1 bootlid (at least thats what I can gather).

Looking on mini spares these seem to be the fixings but don't look like self tapping so if I drill into the boot lid these wouldnt work.

Thanks

You simply fit Riv-Nuts into the boot lid and screw the hinges onto the lid.

With the Mk.3 boot lid the hinged plate carrier sticks out and looks a bit odd. The best thing to do is to get the modification panel from Tim at Mini Mail and cut & weld the Mk.3 boot lid. The hinged plate holder then sits nicely into the recess.

In fact, I have today been fitting that modification panel and the Mk.3 lid now looks exactly like the Mk.1 version.

Yes I wish I knew about that mod for a later bootlid before I bought a new mk1 bootlid for my build!

Thanks All,

Slightly off topic but I know many people change their rear lights to mk1 lights which doesn't have a reverse light.

Will it pass the MOT without a reverse light?

Mine does - the spotlight is wired as a reversing light.

I know some people wire in a spotlight like you have but I also see a lot of other cars that dont appear to have a reverse light. Just wondering what the rules around reverse lights are.

Are they mandatory or considered an additional light.

No reverse light needed for MOT (or certainly not for the era that Minis were made).

Mine needs one because of it's later year of course.

Reverse lights only required on vehicles registered after 1st September 2009.
So not required on classic minis.

That surprises me - it was fitted with one as new, but presumably as long as one fitted works that's all that's reqd up to 2009

A few years before the regs changed I took my daily for it's MOT, and as the tester reversed it out of the parking space I noticed the Reverse lights weren't working (they were before I took it, I checked!).

As he hadn't started the test I thought I would mention it thinking it would be a fail, but he told me not to worry as they don't check reverse lights.

I was quite relieved.

Reverse lights only became part of the mot test in 2018, prior to that they weren't a testable item.
Cars registered before September 2009 still don't need any reverse lights.
