just an update for all of those helping me get back on the road, have completely stripped the cylinder head and the head gasket had well and truly blown, the engine block looked fine, ive learnt a bit about the engine too it would seem from the holes etc that the cylinder head is a slightly modified mini metro head, eg doesn't have a slot for the water bypass hole and was probably used for racing?! having a bit of trouble putting the thing back together one of the push rods seems to always be sticking up too much so can't get the rocker on properly any advice?

Slacken all your rockers off, then tighten the pedistal nuts down evenly.

Make sure all your pushrods are properly engaged in the cam followers (push down and give them a twist, you'll know if they're not in). But as Bluemini says, probably caused by the rocker adjusters being wound in still. I always wind them right off before removing the head as it makes it easier to undo the head nuts evenly IMHO. You will need to do your tappets after you finish.


If it's a 998 with no thermostat bypass at all then you may need to drill your thermostat a bit. What do others think?

you can turn teh engine a small amount so that the pistons and cams aren't fully up, then it will be easier to get teh rocker shaft on

there are 2 lengths of push rod check all urs are the same lenght.
there are 998 rods which are alittle shorter and 1275 rods which are alittle longer, some people can use 998rods in a 1275 block if the head has been skimed alot.

WQhen you removed the pushrods you may have pulled the cam follower out, Turn the engine slowly (by hand) and check that the rod moves.

if you remove the spark plugs, you can turn the engine buy using teh fan but be carefull and gental with the fan
