Just to make the colours more confusing, I have had Blue Rubber Grease.

As Graeme mentioned, don't go off the colour for it's use.

Dam you are lucky I have to do with clear rubber grease.

From what I see the Timken red grease is NLGI 2 and Lithium based so I presume any grease with this spec would be fine for use.

Both Timken and SKF (LGHP 2) rate  to 149 degrees c . I hope mini wheel bearings don’t get hotter than that!

it is confusing though!
General purpose i thought was for gate hinges!

Bought this bearing from Minispares GHK1018 which failed on me today , inner race seems to have fallen apart, Had been cruising at around 50mph when the car made a horrendous noise from offside front, pulled over to see hot grease and smoke coming from inner race. Managed to limp it home and tore it down to find disintergrated bearings , cage is damaged and outer race has signs of overheating.

We used to use LM in the dealers in the 70's and didn't have any problems. I use BNS now as it's a higher spec and is what we used in primary gears. Had to buy a big tub of it from a farm suppliers about 20 yrs ago but may be able to find on the net now.

I have never had a problem with Minispares bearings, though I did with a set of Timkens which failed after a few hundred miles.

Did you preload the bearing before you torqued everything up?

Is the hub still OK?

Good luck getting to the bottom of it.

Hub looks to be ok, these were std bearings not taper roller and I must admit that I didnt do any preload just installed the bearings into the hub refitted the CV joint and tightened to spec. Is there another step I should have done?

The hub bearings should be preloaded by the internal spacer between the two inner races and the step in the hub between the outer races both being the correct thickness.  If the outer step wears the bearings still have play when new, if the inner spacer wears the preload would be excessive.
