Front Drum Brake Wheel Bearings - Roller Type ?

Best Answer nicklouse , 11 May 2020 - 03:33 PM

they are listed for Disc cars as that is what they need.

people have been fitting the drum type and the disc type to either cars for years as they are exactly the same dimensionally.

Hi All

I'm looking for new front wheel bearings for a drum braked car, is it possible to get roller type bearings for these or am i stuck with the ball bearing type ?

I've spent a good while looking about online but not found any, is that because they simply do not exist ?

Looking for the type shown below but for the front of the car, those are for the rear.

Thanks

Craig

Why are they listed for just disc cars ? Do i need anything else to fit them to a drum braked car ? Spacers, remove spacer etc ?

They weren't factory fitted to any of the UK Produced Drum Braked Cars and so that's why they aren't listed to include these ;D

Taper roller bearings far more user friendly then ball bearing type. If you can afford it get the Timken mini sets.

I may be wrong but i think that torque is quite different for both types and the extra torque may damage the drum hub. That's why someone at Minispares recommended me not to fit them in my drum car.

I may have missed something here but- IIRC (haven't looked at one for a while) the CV shaft on a drum mini is much smaller diameter than a disc CV shaft isn't it?

So I don't think it would work using disc tapers with the drum set up?

You are right about the CVs but doesnt the hub stack sit inside the bearing on a drum braked mini.. ie the bearings run on the hub rather than the CV

My memory fades these days too :-) I seem to remember a bearing failing on my pickup and destroying the hub shaft

Had a quick look at minispares website to look at the drum flange and they caution about bearing endfloat (but don't specify on which type of bearing) - I assume they are concerned that any undue variation in the flange spigot length might have an effect as the bearings are mounted on that rather than on the CV directly

I never realised the disc tapered brgs could be fitted to a drum set up as I never had bearing trouble in my drum braked minis - or the disc ones come to that

Yes the tapered can be fitted to drums the difference is drive flange will sit inside the bearing.

like I said above often the ball type bearings were fitted to disc brake cars as a “cheap” fix

the same size bearings were also fitted to the metros. Ball type as they did not need the taper bearings due to the different hub geometry and wheel ET.
